Keith Mongan
Born in Dublin 1975.
Aphelion till Perihelion
These paintings are part of my series of work entitled Aphelion till Perihelion.
Aphelion meaning the moment in time when the earth is furthest from the sun and Perihelion meaning the moment in time when the earth is nearest to the sun.
The title of these works is a reflection of my search to find a technique which was different to how I had painted before and does not directly reflect the subject matter.
To begin with I’ve painted the canvas black, this reflecting Aphelion. I’ve also restricted my pallet by eliminating white and choosing only to work with the primary colours being blue red and yellow. Yellow reflecting Perihelion.
The build-up of paint is quite textured and to look at up close seems as though it was done using a single hair. This however is not the case but not far from the truth. In order to build the paint up I’ve altered my brush by cutting of the majority of bristles except for only a few, to look at the brush would resemble a fork, so instead of having a single stroke I would achieve a series of parallel strokes. After this has dried and with the paint at the correct texture, working the brush in the opposite direction at some speed it is possible to achieve a bridging effect, thus allowing the light to penetrate at different variations while still giving depth to the painted black canvas.
To observe a finished painting for some time under a changing light can bring the movement of the painting to life.
Aphelion till Perihelion is also one artist journey from dark to light, from one point to another, only to begin again?
