Honor Hales
Dublin born artist, Honor Hales, grew up with an ever present curiosity for the creative, whether it be art, drama or music. Art College was a natural progression, so it was off to W.I.T. where she studied Visual Communication through Design until 1993.
After spending a number of years working as a free- lance designer amongst other things, and showing her work through a number of galleries, Honor decided to open her own gallery, Visual Instinct, in Powerscourt Townhouse, Dublin, in 1998. This was a great showcase for her work, but the call of mountains and forests eventually won! She sold up and moved to the midlands at the end of 2006.
Exhibition: "Of Land and Sea" will be the largest solo exhibition of Honor Hales' work to date, pushing the world of colour and texture once again. The influence of nature right on her doorstep is most apparent in her work - this exhibition is fresher and stronger than ever. Country life obviously suits the city girl!
Coming back to have a show with Dermot O'Grady is exciting for Honor as his Green Gallery was one of the first to discover her work years ago.
Medium: Honor Hales' work comes predominantly in two forms, glass and canvas. The glass pieces are created with liquid lead and enamel varnishes on clear glass or hand-made glass with a variety of backings ranging from hand-made paper to crushed velvet. The canvas pieces are mainly on chunky stretched canvas and created with acrylic, oil, liquid lead and enamel varnishes.
Statement: Almost all her work is textured, and as the materials she uses are quite robust, she encourages the viewer to reach out and touch each piece, try closing their eyes with some of the more detailed pieces - they feel like Braille! The connection of the viewer with the piece is a large part of why Honor paints.
Her love of line and fascination with colour began in earnest in college where she wrote her thesis on colour psychology. This interest hasn't faded - quite the contrary in fact. Honor's work grows stronger and braver with every show.
Always open to new ideas, she enjoys the challenge of something different, and, therefore welcomes bespoke work whether paintings or larger pieces for windows, room dividers, and even a wedding present for Ozzy Osborne's son Louis.
A collection is owned by the Health Board (Ireland) and a number of her pieces have been presented to members of government - An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern TD; former Tanaiste, Mary Harney TD; EU Commissioner Charlie McGreevy TD; former President of the EU Parliament , Pat Cox, to name but a few.
